Rothco Vintage Canvas Carry-All Canteen Cover With Shoulder Strap

The military-style canteen design is probably the most under-rated piece of basic military kit every devised. The contoured design holds an entire quart of water in a much smaller profile than a cylindrical water bottle. With the contoured design, you can affix the canteen in a pouch against your body comfortably and without it hanging off. It's also much more comfortable and natural to hold. The canteen cup is also under rated, taking up almost not additional space. It can be used as simple cup or mug, with hot or cold beverages, or as a bowl for your soup, or as a pot to cook with. It's brilliant. Folks who use your standard 32oz Nalgene bottles struggle to find a cup that nests with it-- yet there's a great solution that has been around for decades. However, Nalgene does make a great canteen out of their material, which I am a fan of. Where the Rothco Vintage Canteen Carry comes in hand is when you want to carry your trusty canteen as a standalone item (that is, not attached to a cartridge belt or a pack). The canteen carry gives you a strap so you can carry your canteen where ever you go. The styling is reminiscent of the classic carry pouch that the canteen came with, but it has a shoulder strap instead of ALICE clips. Is this a military grade item? No. It's made from a relatively soft material. I think it will hold up fine for most folks, but I wouldn't 100% rely on it to hold up in a military environment (which to be fair, you shouldn't/wouldn't be using it in that environment anyway). But I'm not in the military anymore. This canteen carry great for those civilian life adventures for us gear nerds who appreciate the GI style canteen. It's a great accessory for when you're hiking, camping, or hunting. I can keep a MOLLE-style canteen pouch on my daypack, main pack, or gun belt (at the range), and easily pull out my canteen carry when I don't need to bring my daypack, main pack, or gun belt. I don't have to fumble around for my water bottle or for my cup, because they are always right there, together, where they belong.

This item does its job and holds a milspec canteen taut to your side, it also has sufficient space for the nested canteen cup if you'd like to go out and survive in the wild like Bear Grylls. I typically leave the steel canteen cup at home and just take a larger mess kit if I'm going camping/scouting, but having the space for it is nice nonetheless. The carry-all has a 3'' by 5'' pocket stitched onto the front, which is secured by a velcro flap and has sufficient depth to hold a single Clif Bar, or a plus-sized Leatherman multi-tool like the ST300 and a mid-sized tactical folder side by side (I was using a SOG FLASH II), or a Victorinox Swisschamp XLT and a few matches or a firesteel. But I just throw the single peanut butter Clif Bar in there most of the time, makes sense to me to have a snack next to a sip. Unfortunately, since this item is made by Rothco and is marked with the dreaded vintage tag it's built out of 100% cotton fabric. Meaning, if you accidentally get it wet filling your canteen up without taking it out of the Carry-all (as many will) it will stay damp for a good while before drying out. The cotton isn't the most fitting choice for an item designed to hold a water container, but it looks good and the stitching is well-done. NOTE: I feel I should add a disclaimer since Military Chic is a big thing in female fashion nowadays, this canteen cover and the canteen it fits are pretty bulky- and a normal small-framed woman would probably look strange sporting it. It isn't modified to look slender the way most converted military styles are, it's brutally functional and IS NOT stylish looking at all. Do not expect to look good walking around with this thing on a Manhattan street. If you're looking for more style I'd look at the US canteen brand.

I have not tested this out on a hike or camping yet and when I do I will have a follow up review. Normally I hate when people review something without testing it out but this is an exception once you read below.I couldn't find this information on any of the reviews that I read before purchasing this so I took and chance and it worked out in my favor. The Stainless Steel GI canteen cup, Canteen Shop stainles steel canteen stove and the Nalgeen Canteen will all fit in this pouch together with no problem. I can't vouch for it's durability or comfort yet but I wanted to get this review out there in case anyone else was wondering if this combination would fit. Based on some of the reviews I read on other canteen pouches,some of the original canteen cup wont fit correctly or it's a tight fit. Some say that the stove wont fit with the other two items etc... This however works just fine and it's a somewhat snug fit but not to the point where you have to cram it down so hard that you can barely snap the flaps shut. The material is a little bit stretchy so I would imagine that over time there will be more play in there. I am going to order the US GI Military Canteen cup boil cover from Heavy Cover Inc. when I get a chance and I am betting that I can probably fit that on the very botton of this pouch and everything will still fit on top of it due to the stretchy cotton material. There is also room for a fire starter and pocket knife in the front pocket with a little room to spare for the small bottles of water treatment pills or protein bar etc... This is a soft material so I know that it's not going to be as durable as an actual Military one would be but the fact that it holds all the items I need is a big plus. I bought this because for one I don't like the idea of carrying something this heavy on my belt. Anytime I am camping or hiking I always carry a small concealed pistol and a knife and that is enough weight on my belt already. I thought this would also be easy to take on and off if I needed to and I could wear my pack over it and still use the kidney belt on my pack being that I could shift this around if I needed to. Like I said I will have a follow up review on this item once I test it out but so far for $9.50 I doubt I will be disappointed because afterall this pouch got 4.5 stars out of 57 reviews. Update: This product is still going strong and a very good investment.

Made of cotton with non-detachable strap. Weird smell when I bought it but gone after washing. Fits my Nalgene canteen perfectly with a useful front pocket (too small to fit my Nexus 6 phone). Nice snaps, good padding. Unfortunately, being cotton it won't dry too quickly if it gets wet.
