Outstanding
The Good:-I have 6 of these units installed around the exterior of my house, paired with a Ademco/Honeywell wireless base (using a 'chime' feature, not a standard ear piercing alarm), going on three years now with not *one* problem, other than ones I've created myself.-Very sturdy product: I accidentally ripped one off the side of my house with the back of my trailer and it went right back up with no problems other than my feelings of stupidity.-Very reliable. I was concerned about false alarms in the middle of the night, but after several years we have only had several that have been easily correctable. In one instance my next door neighbor was setting it off when he got in his car in the morning (so not really a 'false' alarm), and we have one detector that picks up car headlights from a particular driveway at a particular time of day, which I would adjust the sensor if it happened more than a couple of times a year. The batteries are still going after three years, although battery life depends on usage, which ours don't get much activity.-Peace of mind. It feels nice to go to bed at night knowing that I will know the instance someone gets within 40 feet of my house, which gives me time enough to put my clothes on and arm myself in case I need to protect my family. And they do have tamper alarms, so the alarm will sound if you don't have them activated and someone tries to rip one off the wall (hopefully you are at home if that happens). The Bad:-Programming these into a base unit is not for the faint at heart. The detector itself is very straight forward in its control mechanisms, and also easy to install on the wall, so not a knock on this product, but you are still signing up to program a base unit if you buy one of these. Different units can present different experiences, but it usually isn't simple with most 'professional' units. It took me most of a day to install six external units (plus a couple of inside units) and setup two base units, but this isn't an issue just pertaining to these detectors, so be prepared to spent some time getting them set up the way you want, regardless of what you end up buying. Just know with these, once you get them setup and work out any intricacies they usually work great.-They are *expensive* compared to other units, but you get what you pay for. I watched a friend who bought some cheaper units that were 'easier' to work with and then subsequently spend months and many sleepless nights trying to get his to function properly to no avail and then finally give up on them. These are designed for outdoor use and they just work. The Ugly:-As with most things you have outside, they can get nasty (e.g. bird poop, sun fade, other miscellaneous gunk), so clean them up once or twice a year and try not to put them in direct sunlight. I put a piece of heavy duty plastic over the top crease/crack and that seemed to help on the top (which is where most of the gunk accumulates, granted, I live beside a busy road which creates a lot of dust/dirt, so you may not find it necessary).***Update March 2020*** Overall this has been a solid system for 10+ years with very few problems. After 8-9 years I've had 2 out of 6 units stop communicating with the base for no obvious reason, even though everything appeared to check out fine (batteries, base re-enrollment, different locations, sniffer success), which had to be replaced, but I'm still going to keep using these units as they have given me so few problems.

It Could Have Been A Great Addition To The 5800 Series
The 5800PIR-OD contains two infrared sensors and is powered by four AA lithium batteries. I purchased this unit because it is compatible with my ELK-M1XRF2H wireless receiver and I intended to use it to monitor the deck on the rear of the house. This unit appears to communicate fine with my wireless receiver, even through exterior walls. It has controls for setting the PIR sensitivity (L/M/H), four different sensor ranges up to forty feet, and the ninety degree sensor coverage can be rotated forty-five degrees to the left or right. This item is nearly the size of a football. According to the instructions it has a four foot maximum mounting height, instead of the eight or nine feet you find on an indoor PIR, which puts it in range for small children to handle or people to bump with chairs. This item comes with specialized hardware for mounting it to a pole, but does not provide screws for mounting it to a wall.According to Honeywell's website this item is "Immune to bright lights from head lamps, sunlight and other light sources that typically generate false detections", but the instructions say not to mount it anywhere in direct sunlight. On a sunny day the sensor triggers continuously and after numerous false alarms I had to disable it less than four hours after installing it.I originally installed this item with 60% of the coverage area pointing into "infinity" and it would not trigger at all - I later repositioned it to reduce this to 30% and now the detection performs better. Mounting this item outdoors so it is facing a wall within the coverage area while keeping it out of direct sunlight can be difficult. The tamper switch worked flawlessly, it triggered quickly every time the case was opened.

No help or install info.
Briefly, I have a Honeywell security system, using the 5800pir-od sensors. When it decided to not work, wakening me at night and irritating me continuously in the day time, I tried to get info from Honeywell. Now these are pretty complicated systems to trouble shoot and repair. Just know Honeywell refuses to share a site to load necessary info, which is installation manual. If you buy this YOU will not have the info to install, correct faults, etc. unless you hire someone. You can own it just not service it.

Very high end sensor!
Very high end sensor. This thing is much larger than you would expect. I have yet to have a false alarm or any problems with these.
