An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of World War I An expert guide to the uniforms of Britain, France, Russia, America, Germany and Austria-Hungary with over 650 colour illustrations • An unparalleled visual catalogue of the uniforms of Britain, France, Russia, America, Germany and Austria-Hungary, with additional detail on the armies of Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Serbia, the Ottomans, Japan and others • A definitive analysis of the command structures of the armies, and the deployment, tactics and motivation of these national forces, as well as fascinating detail of day-to-day life for the soldiers • An insightful introduction gives a concise, account of the war, setting out its political and social background • Illustrations also include contemporaneous photographs and dramatic fine art paintings, which bring to life the experience of the soldiers on campaign The war of 1914-1918 was a military, political and social disaster. No other war changed the map of Europe so drastically, and more than 15 million people were killed. The dramatic political and social changes of the period were mirrored in the uniforms of the armed forces, and the contrast between pre-war Europe and 1919 could not be more apparent. This unique illustrated book charts the developments in military uniform in fascinating detail: how the reds and blues of 1900 soldiers gave way to the less conspicuous browns, greys and greens. It also tracks the evolution of hardware and ammunition. Evocative photographs of the struggle and stunning illustrations of the uniforms show in detail the changes, reforms and modifications of all the major powers, Great Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary. This unprecedented volume is an incredible visual study of the uniforms of a pivotal period of military history, and of its context. Review: Used for a school project - We actually bought this to cut a few pages out for a visual project on WW1 uniforms for a Social Studies class. Overall very impressed with the quality of the images and extremely intriguing information as well. Review: Excellent book for painters of WWI figures - I loved the size of photos as well as the information on the wear of the particular uniform.

A war and it's outcome that happened over 100 years ago still affects our world today.
This book on WW1 uniforms and weapons/gear for the soldiers from many nations fighting in the conflict was very interesting. Although many don't realize it, the outcome of that war still influences things happening in our world today for example: the Northern Ireland conflict and all the fighting in the Middle East we have seen over the years.

Uniforms of World War 1 delivers an excellent illustrated account of the uniforms worn by all the ...
Uniforms of World War 1 delivers an excellent illustrated account of the uniforms worn by all the major armies in World War 1, and includes a wealth of supporting information about their development and history. While it may be a bit thin on the lesser-known countries in the Balkans, it makes up for this with the depth it pours into the other nations. The full-color illustrations are unrivaled in their detail and quantity. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is curious about World War 1, and the armies that fought in it.

Excellent introduction to WW1 uniforms
If you know little about World War 1 uniforms, this is an outstanding, well-organized introduction to the subject. The "Introduction" introduces neophytes to the war, discussing its causes, campaigns, and final outcome. As for the uniform-related information, it is true that a lot of this information can be found in multiple Osprey volumes and assorted other out-of-print titles. However, it is nice to see it all placed in a single, reasonably priced volume. The narrative of the most of this book is devoted to the presentation and evolution of uniforms, with very little mention of arms and equipment. I think many readers will be tempted to skim over this rather dry text, and just examine the color uniform plates. For the most part, the quality of the color illustrations is outstanding, and very much in keeping with the standard set by Osprey. I cannot give this volume 5 stars for the following reason: some of the major powers (UK, Britain, Germany, Russia) receive very thorough coverage in this book. Other major powers (namely Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Italy, USA) get much less detail. The "lesser powers" (Serbia, Romania, Greece, Belgium, Greece, etc) are covered only superficially. This is a real disappointment given the dearth of information in print on these countries. I am guessing that the publisher believed that most of their English-speaking readers would be more interested in learning about the combatants in the Western Front, so this is largely my own preference being expressed here.

Awesome book!
I have every title in this illustrated uniform series. They are all equally stunning. I have over 400 titles of the Osprey Men at War and Elite Series and the artwork in those books varies wildly from very good to barely acceptable, not so with those series. They are ALL of the same high caliber!

Fantastic & detailed illustrations -- with rich background information
Fantastic book. The illustrations are top notch -- and while there are plenty of them, this book is 80% information, 20% illustrations. Perhaps 70/30. Uniforms are not only covered factually, but the "why's" of the uniform choices are as well. On top of that, the first 30 pages or so of the book is rich in background info on WWI. Nothing you don't already know if you're a history buff, but interesting nonetheless. I would have paid 10-20 dollars more for this if I had to, it's honestly that good!

Fairly good reference/enjoyable reading
I bought this book as an addendum for general period research. While it does have some limitations, namely in that it is very Anglo-centric, doesn't give much information such as rank structure, the reason for the formation and make-up of certain units, and isn't very strong in providing detailed historical information, it does serve as a good base for little go-to facts and even gives some historical context to assist those who might be less familiar with the political and social aspects as well as the major campaigns of the war in general. It's an enjoyable read, particularly because it doesn't need (or lend) itself to necessitating being read in order, so you can read up on something specific you have in mind or browse at leisure.

Consistently beautiful illustrations
With some illustrated books like this, the quality of images can vary - not so with The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of Word War 1. I was impressed with the clarity and colour of each and every example and appreciated the wide variety of national uniforms included in this work. It is a great resource for anyone who needs good colour references for gaming or photo colourization, as well as photo identification for research purposes. I am very pleased with this book, which was a very welcome gift!
