The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom

Easy to read. The descriptions are brief but engaging and thorough. The book size and binding in white and gold makes it a delight for book lovers to hold. Add the magnificent photos (one per page) of the early Christian art in mosaic and painting and you have in itself a masterpiece of work that obliges layman and connoisseur to stop time for a bit and emerge in the richness of a world at the beginning of the Christian Era, a world that united East and West with its art, religion and power.

Magnificent, in terms of content and presentation. Judiciously chosen illustrations, set in a clear and well-argued text. A joy to possess this book.

Gorgeous Photography!! Absolutely stunning book!!!

This book combines History and Art rather than it being an Art History. It is lavish from its concept to its realisation and powerfully beautiful. The mysteries of Orthodoxy are introduced to the reader by the beautiful images that are so breathtakingly presented. You can by books on Istanbul and its art, architecture and history but this edition surpasses the transition form Byzantine to Ottoman to present an eclectic view of the scope of Byzantine Orthodoxy through its art. If you only have one book on this topic make it this one.

The book arrived in perfect condition, promptly. Online it looked good. I didn't expect it to be an art or history treatise, but th text was concise and interesting. However, the internal pictures were stunning and the production of the entire book is truly special. This is a real showpiece book. It would make a wonderful gift.

This is the best illustrated book I've ever come across on early Christendom and Byzantium. The photographs are stunning, and very ably selected. It's the sort of book that will grow on you, as you delight in returning again and again to the meticulous detail both in the photos and in their description. Pure gold - and that's just the cover and the edges: a treasure-trove within. I almost was on the point of going on to say that it's worth its weight in gold!

Very good overall concept and excellent texts but the lower than poor quality of so many of its illustrations (pp14, 15, 18, 119, 193, 195 159, 215...) , is shocking in book that tries so hard to look great. It is hard to believe that Phaidon could not find better images of, for instance, Dura Europos or the Palace of Diocletian. Disappointing
