In Lakota tradition, the bow and arrow were more than tools for hunting or battle. The bowยs resilience and flexibility, the arrowยs grace and power, the archerยs focus and patienceยin these, we find the essential qualities for living a life of strength, purpose, and simplicity. In The Lakota Way of Strength and Courage , Joseph M. Marshall builds upon the central metaphor of the bow and arrow to provide a treasury of insights, stories, and irreplaceable wisdom. With eloquent prose and an elderยs perspective, Marshall draws from traditional stories, the history of the Lakota, and his own experiences to offer timeless lessons on: ยท Transformationยwhat the journey of the Lakota people teaches us about preserving what is essential as our external circumstances change ยท Simplicityยthe story of Grandmother Grass Braid, who understood that ยthe more you know, the less you need to carryย ยท Purposeยhow the world unveils our purpose to us, as revealed in the story of the Keeper of the Winter Count ยท Strengthยthe moving story of Henry One Bull, and how adversity teaches us to develop the true core of our strength Review: An interesting reflection on Native American wisdom and history - The author, of Native American heritage, writes well and provides powerfully worded, helpful insights to the plight and character of his ancestral way of life. He presents a sobering summary of aspects of Lakota history without sounding bitter, though he and his people and their culture certainly have a right to the strongest of emotions about how they have been historically treated by European invaders. The anecdotes and parables along the way framed by historical reference that gives place and time to the narrative, are worthy of your time if contemplating life, feeling compassion and learning to respect another culture's path through existence is of interest to you. Review: Excellent - Excellent

Sage Advice
Marshall has very good advice for everyone and clearly states it via his Native American story telling style. At times I find his style of writing a bit boring/it drags on and is a bit too detailed but then again this is his cultural style of storytelling and imparting knowledge, wisdom and advice. I learned a great deal about the bow and arrow and their connections etc. and how everything came about and is used in the Lakota culture. Interesting if you can stay with it all the way through the book. One needs to remain focused on the subject at all times and this is one of the purposes of learning in this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the Lakota and their culture.

Actually I already had this book and had read it with great enthusiasm.
I had purchased this book several years ago while studying Indigenous societies, their religions, and cultures. Believing it to be a new publication, I ordered it again. I am quite appreciative of Marshall's sharing of the knowledge he was given by his elders. I now have several of his works in my library and have no intention of parting with them. In fact I utilized quotes from his books while preparing various papers for a Master of Arts degree with great success. My desire is to encourage more people to purchase his works and to discuss the various manners in which our Western society can be benefit from the teachings and examples of life styles and qualities of humanity the elders of the Indigenous peoples so aptly described by Marshall.

Simple, Powerful, Profound Lessons
Joseph Marshall's latest book really nails the notion of simplicity in teaching the traditional ways of the Lakota people. He effectively ties in stories passed down to him that speak of the inner strength the Lakota have. He uses the metaphor of the bow and arrow to illustrate various principles in life. His major themes are: transformation, simplicity, purpose, strength, and resiliency. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking personal transformation or anyone that wants to connect to a simpler life.

thoughtful
I found this a thoughtfully written book, containing much food for thought. I will certainly never view a bow & arrows without thinking of the lessons they can symbolize. Several times I've found myself remembering & sharing stories & lessons from the book. Whenever I find something good, I try to share it so more people can enjoy & perhaps benefit.
