work for the forerunner 735XT?

No. The 735 uses a wrist based heart rate sensor and this kit would block it. Even if you didn't care about that it's a different shape than the 920 and won't work.

Is this kit required to use the 310XT with my Garmin Edge out front bike mount?

Kit is required if you want to mount the 310XT on your bike handle bars and to quick disconnect to mount on your wrist using the wrist adapter stuff that comes with this. I tried riding and just using the 310XT on my wrist...unstable riding was the result. When the 310XT is mounted on the bike, it is very useful. I check with it frequently...e.g. cadence (using the bike cadence magnet kit), heart rate, speed, distance.
