is it empty inside the plastic handle?

Yes, it is hollow. It was nice that they were so lightweight but my kids really didn't enjoy using them because they had no bounce to them at all when the birdie hit the netted part. They broke very quickly.

What is the age range these racquets are appropriate for please?

We bought them for preschoolers. They seemed to enjoy them most from ages 1 through 3. We lost the little ball and use the remaining paddle to pop bubbles now. If you try to hit hard balls with the paddles they will break.

Has anyone played this in the pool? Just wondering if the pieces would float or sink

Yes. We bought it specifically to play in the pool. They do sink - both the racquets as well as the balls. We are mostly adult users, so not as hard as children would be, and they didn’t last more than a week before the net came out and they had to be thrown away ☹️.
